The new program from the LEGO Group is one of the more recent examples of how the DQ Institute collaborates with brands to embed the DQ Global Standard (IEEE 3527.1TM) in programmes that promote a better understanding of key digital citizenship skills. The LEGO Group’s Digital Citizenship Program is founded on the DQ Global Standard and draws from the knowledge and experience gained from the Institute’s #DQEveryChild initiative. In fact, by working with partners like the LEGO Group, the DQ Institute is able to extend and ensure continuity from #DQEveryChild, a global digital citizenship movement that ended in 2020. The DQ Institute hopes to continue to build on this momentum and create a global system capable of educating people of all ages, not just youth, on the importance of a healthy and sustainable connected life that is driven by sound human values.
The LEGO Group Digital Citizenship Program includes a mix of game play, interactive videos, guides and activities that provide children and families with the opportunity to playfully explore and learn more about safety, wellbeing, and empathy in the digital world. The program explores eight key competency areas identified by the DQ Institute’s DQ Framework as being necessary for empowering children to become positive digital citizens that contribute to a safer and more constructive digital community.
Kathrine Kirk Muff, VP of Social Responsibility at the LEGO Group, commented: “Play should be as safe in the digital world as in the physical one. That’s why we design all our digital products and experiences with child safety at the core. What’s more, we want to play our part in ensuring children and families can learn about digital safety and wellbeing through playful experiences. We hope these new activities enable families to playfully explore what it means to be a good friend and player online, to nurture healthy digital safety habits and better understand how they can contribute to safer and more positive communities in a digital age.”
Many of the programs supported by the DQ Institute seek to foster a parent/child conversation about digital literacy and online safety. The fun-but-informative activities designed by the LEGO Group are a perfect example, where the Institute continues to work with partners that are providing opportunities and platforms for these conversations to take place.
The DQ Institute has been an important contributor to the digital skills development movement, collaborating with governments, NGOs, and the private sector to further their goal of equipping human kind with the right competencies and confidence to become masters of the artificial intelligence (AI) age.
Dr. Yuhyun Park, founder of the DQ Institute, had this to say about their programs: “As children are spending more and more time online with home-based learning and social distancing, it is critically important for parents and families to be equipped with the tools that they can easily use to empower their children in becoming good digital citizens with critical thinking at a young age.”
